Priyanka Gandhi Urges Swift Relief as Floods Worsen in Assam, Arunachal; Shah Assures Centre’s Support

New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed deep sorrow over the devastating impact of heavy rains and floods in northeastern states like Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, which have affected lakhs of residents and claimed several lives. Taking to X, she appealed for urgent action from both central and state governments to intensify relief and rescue efforts, while urging Congress workers to extend every possible help to the flood-hit population.

“The news of deaths due to heavy rains in the northeastern states, including Assam and Arunachal, is extremely sad. Lakhs of people are affected by the floods. May God protect everyone. There is an appeal to the central and state governments to speed up relief and rescue operations so that people have to suffer minimum trouble. I also urge Congress leaders and workers to help the affected people as much as possible,” she wrote.

In Assam, landslides and flooding have led to multiple fatalities. Five people died earlier due to a landslide, with their families receiving an ex gratia of ₹4 lakh each, as confirmed by Assam Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah. Separate incidents saw a person drown in floodwaters in Sribhumi district and a child lose his life in Cachar district.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that over 3.64 lakh people have been affected across 19 districts, including Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup, Dhemaji, Nagaon, Sribhumi, and Cachar. Cachar district alone accounts for more than 1 lakh affected people, while Sribhumi and Nagaon report 83,000 and 62,000 affected respectively.

In Arunachal Pradesh, incessant rains have triggered deadly landslides. Chief Minister Pema Khandu conveyed his condolences and announced ₹4 lakh compensation to families of the deceased. At least nine deaths have been reported, with seven in East Kameng district and two in the Ziro valley.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also stepped in to assure central assistance. He held conversations with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, as well as the Governor of Manipur. “Spoke with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh and the Governor of Manipur in the wake of ongoing heavy rainfall in their states. Also, I assured them of every possible help in tackling any situation. The Modi government stands like a rock in support of the people of the Northeast,” Shah posted on X.
