Rule of Law in Danger, Education in Crisis: Mayawati Slams UP Government Over Rising Crime and Failing Schools

Lucknow:  Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Sunday raised serious concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation and the dismal condition of government schools in Uttar Pradesh, calling for urgent government intervention and accountability.

In a strongly worded post on X (formerly Twitter), Mayawati said, “Due to the dominance of feudal and criminal elements in various states of the country, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, acts of casteist and communal hatred, violence, injustice and oppression and displacement of people, etc., prove that the rule of law is not functioning properly here.”

She added that the newly appointed DGP of UP Police faces a formidable task in re-establishing the rule of law in a state grappling with mounting criminal activities. “The new chief of UP Police faces a big challenge to control crime and establish the rule of law… The state government and ruling party need to ensure cooperation to protect public interest,” she stated.

Mayawati urged that Uttar Pradesh must not be seen merely through the lens of crime and chaos but as a vital contributor to India’s development. “UP should play a pivotal role in India’s progress. But unfortunately, negative discussions are now overshadowing its reputation, which is a matter of grave concern,” she lamented.

In addition to concerns over law and order, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister also criticised the poor state of government-run primary schools in the state. Earlier this month, she described the education system as “very pathetic” and warned that it poses a serious threat to the future of marginalised communities.

“The poor condition of the government school system shows the lack of proper attention towards the educational needs of the underprivileged,” she said. “The government must act immediately to improve infrastructure and learning standards in these schools.”
