Patna: Darbhanga witnessed political tension on Wednesday after the district administration denied permission for Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Nyay Samvad’ event at the Ambedkar Hostel in Madarpur. The decision triggered protests from Congress leaders and workers, who accused the administration of attempting to stifle student voices and suppress outreach to marginalized communities.

The event, part of Gandhi’s campaign to connect with Dalit and underprivileged students, was scheduled to be held in the government-run hostel. However, District Welfare Officer Alok Kumar declined the request, citing potential “disruption to the hostel’s environment.”

District Magistrate Rajiv Roshan defended the move, stating, “An event like this cannot be allowed in a hostel setting. We’ve offered Town Hall as an alternative venue. They are welcome to hold it there.”

The decision drew sharp criticism from the Congress. Local leaders and NSUI members staged a demonstration near the hostel, shouting slogans and accusing the administration of political bias and working under pressure from the NDA government.

A heavy police deployment, along with a duty magistrate, was positioned at the Ambedkar Hostel to prevent any escalation.

Reacting to the incident, the Bihar Congress took to social media, saying, “The administration is afraid of student unity. This is not just a denial of permission; it’s a conspiracy to silence Dalit voices.”

Darbhanga Deputy Mayor Nazia Hasan also condemned the action: “If the administration did not want to grant us permission, they could have denied it the day we asked. But cancelling it at the last minute is part of a pre-planned conspiracy… The government fears Rahul Gandhi will unite and inspire the youth.”
