US Urges India, Pakistan to Cooperate in De-escalating Tensions After Pahalgam Terror Attack

Washington DC: In a bid to reduce rising tensions between India and Pakistan following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, the United States has urged both nations to collaborate on de-escalation efforts. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke separately to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to address the aftermath of the April 22 strike that left 26 dead in Jammu and Kashmir.

During his conversation with Jaishankar, Rubio expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the “horrific terrorist attack” and reaffirmed the US’s commitment to working with India in combating terrorism. According to a statement from the US State Department, Rubio also encouraged India to collaborate with Pakistan to maintain peace and security in South Asia, urging both countries to de-escalate tensions.

Jaishankar, in turn, emphasized that the perpetrators and planners of the attack “must be brought to justice,” highlighting India’s determination to respond to the violence.

In his call with Sharif, Rubio urged Pakistan to cooperate in investigating the “unconscionable attack” and reiterated the need for Pakistan to work with India towards de-escalation, restoring direct communication channels, and ensuring regional peace and security. Both leaders agreed on the importance of holding terrorists accountable for their actions.
