Bengaluru: A disturbing incident of alleged assault on Indian Air Force Wing Commander Aditya Bose and his wife, Squadron Leader Madhumita, in Bengaluru has triggered a wave of outrage across the defence community. The incident, initially a case of road rage, escalated into a conflict over language, raising serious concerns about the treatment of defence personnel and the growing intolerance towards non-local languages in parts of India.

The incident occurred on April 18, 2025, while the couple was travelling from the DRDO colony in CV Raman Nagar to Kempegowda International Airport. According to Wing Commander Bose, a biker intercepted their car, began verbally abusing them in Kannada, and grew more aggressive after spotting the DRDO sticker on their vehicle. The confrontation turned violent when the biker allegedly assaulted the officer with a key, causing a deep cut on his forehead. Additional individuals reportedly joined in the attack, with one striking Bose on the head with a stone.

The officer recorded a video moments after the assault, his face and neck covered in blood. The footage, which went viral on social media, drew national attention and prompted swift action from the Bengaluru police, who later confirmed that an arrest had been made.

In response, retired defence officers expressed deep concern over the growing regional hostilities faced by personnel serving across the country. Lieutenant General (retd) KJS Dhillon questioned whether service members should be expected to learn every regional language despite being posted across 10–15 different states during their careers. “Does he have to learn the language of each state before he lays down his life protecting his Nation?” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Major Manik M Jolly (retd) also condemned the attack, saying, “This ‘speak Kannada’ thing is really getting out of hand… It’s shameful that a state would treat them this way.”

The veterans also called on the central government to consider legislative measures to ensure the safety of armed forces personnel from regional discrimination and hate crimes. Many argued that such incidents not only disrespect those who serve but also set a dangerous precedent for linguistic intolerance and civic hostility.
