New Delhi: The Congress party has sharply criticized the recent killing of Bhavesh Chandra Roy, a prominent Hindu leader in Dinajpur, Bangladesh, terming it a grim signal of rising threats to minority communities in the region.

In a post shared on X, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh raised alarm over the deteriorating situation for religious minorities in Bangladesh. He pointed to repeated attacks and desecration of religious sites as part of a larger, unsettling trend.

“This tragic incident is yet another example of how vulnerable minorities have become,” Ramesh said, “The abduction and brutal death of Bhavesh Chandra Roy is deeply shocking and raises serious concerns about the protection and rights of Hindu communities in Bangladesh.”

The senior leader urged the Indian government to take prompt diplomatic steps, saying, “India must engage with Bangladesh at the highest levels to ensure justice for the victims and safety for those at risk. We cannot afford to stay silent.”

Roy, who served as the vice-president of the Biral unit of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, was allegedly abducted from his home earlier this week and later found dead. He was a highly regarded figure in the Basudebpur village of Shatagram Union in Dinajpur’s Biral upazila.

Ramesh emphasized that such violence is not isolated. “There have been a series of disturbing incidents involving minorities — from attacks on homes to vandalism of temples. This is no longer just about isolated events but an escalating pattern,” he warned.
