New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday raised an alarm over what it termed as “stagnation” in the job market, pointing out that the distress has now seeped into the country’s top educational institutions. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said that even elite institutes such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are grappling with placement concerns.

Citing official data, Ramesh claimed that nearly one-fifth of IIT students are not being placed, highlighting that the ongoing employment crisis is no longer confined to the informal sector or rural populations. According to him, the latest placement data indicates that the issue has reached the very top of India’s educational pyramid.

Ramesh referred to the 364th report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, which outlines a significant drop in placements across premier technical institutes, including IITs, NITs, and IIITs. He noted that the report includes detailed year-on-year placement statistics from IITs, revealing a disturbing trend.

According to Ramesh, between 2021–22 and 2023–24, 22 out of 23 IITs witnessed a decline in placement rates, with 15 of them registering a dip of over 20 percentage points. He stated that in 2021–22, 90.43% of BTech students from IITs who appeared for campus placements were placed, but this number dropped to 80.25% in 2023–24.

Extending the concern to the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), Ramesh claimed that 23 out of 25 IIITs reported a decline in placements during 2023–24 compared to 2021–22. Of these, 16 institutions saw a fall of more than 10 percentage points.

He further highlighted a downturn in salary packages at National Institutes of Technology (NITs). Between 2022–23 and 2023–24, the average annual salary packages offered to graduates from 27 of the 31 NITs declined. In three NITs, the drop in average packages exceeded ₹3 lakh per annum.

The Congress leader added that the number of students placed at these 31 NITs fell from 18,957 in 2022–23 to 16,915 in 2023–24, marking a decrease of 10.77%.
