New Delhi: New Delhi is preparing for an intense spell of summer heat, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting a heatwave to grip the capital and several adjoining states in the coming days. As per the latest bulletin, maximum temperatures in Delhi are expected to soar between 40 and 42°C on April 7 and 8, raising alarms for vulnerable groups and prompting public health advisories.
“Strong surface winds and isolated heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in parts of Delhi on Saturday,” the IMD stated in its update. On Friday, the city recorded a maximum of 38.4°C, which is 4.4 degrees above normal, while the minimum stood at 18.8°C.
The heatwave will not be confined to Delhi alone. The IMD has also issued alerts for multiple states, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, and even Konkan & Goa.
The regional meteorological centre in New Delhi predicts a steady rise in temperatures through the week:
- April 5: Max 38–40°C | Min 18–20°C
- April 6: Max 39–41°C | Min 19–21°C
- April 7-8: Max 40–42°C | Min 20–23°C
- April 9-10: Max 39–41°C expected
Despite the soaring daytime temperatures, no warm night conditions are forecast during this period, which may offer some nighttime relief to residents.
According to IMD, heatwave conditions are likely in the following areas:
- April 5-9: Delhi, South Haryana, Saurashtra & Kutch, West Uttar Pradesh
- April 5-7: Himachal Pradesh
- April 6-9: Punjab and Gujarat region
- April 5-10: West Rajasthan
- April 6-10: East Rajasthan
- April 7-10: West Madhya Pradesh
- April 5-10: Hot & humid weather in Gujarat
- April 5-9: Hot & humid weather in Konkan & Goa
The IMD has urged people, especially the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions, to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and limit outdoor activities during peak hours.
