Dhaka: Dhaka witnessed a shocking act of violence on Wednesday night as an enraged mob vandalized the historic residence and memorial of Bangladesh’s founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in Dhanmondi-32. The attack was reportedly fueled by demands to ban the Awami League, the political party founded by Rahman.
According to visuals circulating online, flames engulfed parts of the house as protesters stormed the premises. As per local media reports, tensions escalated following an online speech by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Social media posts had earlier called for a “Bulldozer Procession” targeting Mujibur Rahman’s residence if Hasina addressed the nation.
By 8 PM (local time), protesters began gathering outside the historic house, and by 10:45 PM, an excavator was brought in an attempt to demolish the building. The mob forcefully broke through the main gate and vandalized the property, with many climbing to the second floor, using hammers and crowbars to destroy portraits of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, according to Dhaka Tribune.
Hasnat Abdullah, convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, had reportedly incited the attack with a Facebook post declaring, “Tonight, the land of Bangladesh will be freed from fascism.” Other figures, including Sharif Osman Hadi of the Inquilab Mancha and Jatiyo Nagorik Committee, also shared inflammatory messages before the violence broke out.
This is not the first time the Dhanmondi-32 residence has been targeted. On August 5, demonstrators previously attacked the house, causing significant damage and setting parts of it ablaze.
Sheikh Hasina, who fled Bangladesh in August last year, is currently residing in India. Her absence has intensified political turmoil in the country, with opposition forces growing increasingly aggressive against the Awami League. The incident has sparked outrage, with many calling for immediate action against those responsible.
