Mumbai: In a bold move, Lok Sabha MP and Trinamool Congress leader Shatrughan Sinha has urged the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) that reflects the concerns of all communities, emphasizing the need for careful consideration to avoid political motives tied to elections.
Speaking to ANI, Sinha acknowledged the necessity of a UCC but warned against hasty or unilateral decisions. “A Uniform Civil Code should indeed be implemented, but it must be approached with great care. It cannot be introduced in a way that feels politically driven or aimed at gaining votes,” he said. He proposed a multi-party meeting to ensure broad consensus, ensuring the inclusion of diverse community perspectives before any final decisions are made.
Sinha also weighed in on the issue of beef bans, noting that while he personally supports beef bans, the country must have consistency in its policies. “In some regions, beef is banned, and I agree with this. Personally, I believe non-vegetarian food should be banned, but that’s my opinion. The inconsistency in policy between regions, such as in the Northeast and North India, is problematic,” he stated. “This kind of inconsistency cannot continue.”
His comments come amid the Uttarakhand government’s announcement of a UCC, which was a key promise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the 2022 state elections. The state has launched an online portal for the UCC, allowing citizens to access services related to marriage, divorce, live-in relationships, and grievance redressal.
