Mumbai: Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India, has emphasized the importance of work-life balance, asserting that human productivity declines beyond 8 to 9 hours of work per day. His comments come in response to recent statements by industry leaders advocating for extended work hours.
In an interview with Business Today, Poonawalla stated, “Human beings can’t be productive beyond 8-9 hours. Sometimes, you have to put in those hours, and it is fine, but you can’t do that every day.” He stressed that while hard work is essential, maintaining a balance is crucial for sustained productivity. “You need to have a social life and balance your life so that you can come back refreshed to work and be productive,” he added.
This perspective contrasts with remarks from other business leaders. Larsen & Toubro Chairman SN Subrahmanyan recently endorsed a 90-hour workweek, suggesting that employees should work on Sundays as well. Similarly, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy advocated for a 70-hour workweek, emphasizing the need for increased work hours to boost India’s global competitiveness.
Poonawalla’s stance aligns with research indicating that excessive work hours can lead to diminishing returns in productivity and negatively impact health. He highlighted that while occasional overtime may be necessary, it should not become the norm. “Sometimes, you have to put in those hours, and it is fine, but you can’t do that every day,” he remarked.
