New Delhi: In a significant move to combat rising road fatalities in India, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced on Tuesday the expansion of the cashless treatment scheme for road accident survivors. The pilot initiative, which currently provides up to ₹1.5 lakh in cashless treatment for a seven-day period, will be extended to all states across India by March 2025.
The scheme, which has already benefited 6,840 individuals in states such as Assam, Chandigarh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Puducherry, and Haryana, aims to ensure timely medical intervention during the critical “golden hour” after a road accident. Gadkari expressed hope that the expanded initiative would help save up to 50,000 lives by providing immediate access to medical care.
Addressing the issue of road safety, Gadkari also highlighted the government’s commitment to introducing new technological solutions to improve safety on roads. As part of the ministry’s plan, new buses and trucks will be equipped with three tech-based systems, including an audio warning system that alerts drivers when they are at risk of falling asleep at the wheel. This measure is part of a broader effort to reduce the alarming number of fatalities caused by road accidents, particularly those involving trucks.
A ministry report cited by Gadkari revealed that in 2022, 33,000 people were killed in accidents involving trucks. The minister made these announcements following a series of workshops and meetings with transport secretaries and commissioners from all states, aimed at strengthening road safety measures and sharing best practices.
