Lucknow: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the schedule for the Milkipur Assembly bypoll in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya district. Voting will take place on February 5, with the results declared on February 8.

This bypoll is significant for both the ruling BJP and the opposition Samajwadi Party (SP), with each party vying to assert its dominance in this high-profile constituency.

The BJP, buoyed by its recent electoral successes, is expected to emphasize its narrative of Hindu unity with slogans like ‘batenge toh katenge’ (divided we perish). Meanwhile, the SP is banking on its “PDA” strategy, which connects with pichda (OBCs), Dalits, and alpshankyak (minorities), a formula credited for its strong performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

In the recent bypolls for nine assembly seats, the BJP demonstrated a dominant performance, securing six seats and an additional win through its ally, the RLD. The SP managed to retain two seats, Karhal in Mainpuri and Sishamau in Kanpur, albeit with reduced margins, making the Milkipur bypoll a critical test for the party.

The Milkipur seat was vacated after SP MP Awadhesh Prasad, who won the seat in 2022, stepped down to focus on his parliamentary duties. The bypoll has been scheduled following the withdrawal of legal challenges related to the 2022 elections.
