New Delhi: In response to the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases across India, Delhi’s Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj has issued a directive to the city’s health and family welfare department to be fully prepared for any potential rise in respiratory illnesses.

With three confirmed cases of HMPV in India, including the first reported in Gujarat, the Delhi government is taking proactive measures to safeguard public health. In the directive, Bharadwaj emphasized the importance of preparedness, given the global circulation of the virus and the cases now emerging within India.

“It is directed that the health and family welfare department should maintain careful tracking of any such trends in the country. They should be in touch with the union health ministry to get timely updates about the preparedness in the capital. It is important that hospitals in Delhi should be well-equipped to handle any potential increase in respiratory illness as per the advice of union health ministry,” the health minister’s statement read.

In addition, Bharadwaj ensured there would be swift communication in case of urgent issues, stressing that he could be reached directly to prevent any delays in action.

The health minister also ordered the health secretary to conduct daily physical inspections at three major hospitals in Delhi. The inspections will focus on the availability of medicines, ICU bed capacity, the functionality of radiological equipment, and the presence of data entry operators at OPD counters. The health secretary is required to submit a daily report to the minister with findings from the inspections.
