Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas, marking her first visit to the area since violent protests erupted over allegations of sexual harassment against local TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates. The protests followed accusations that Shahjahan and his supporters had assaulted women and forcibly seized land.
In her address to the crowd, Mamata urged everyone to remain peaceful, stating, “No one should go if any naughty people call you. You have the right not to go. Don’t give money to anyone for availing government schemes. It is the government who pays for the schemes for the welfare of the common people.”
Mamata also responded to the claims that BJP funds were being used to spread misinformation, saying, “Lots of money has been given by the BJP for spreading lies. Later the truth came out.”
While inaugurating several welfare schemes, Mamata assured the residents that she would stay vigilant for their protection, promising to be their “Paharadar” (guardian). She stressed the importance of women as the head of the family and said, “Sandeshkhali is as sweet as Sandesh,” referring to the popular Bengali sweet, while indicating her plans to develop the region into a “sandesh hub.”
The visit comes after a series of events that drew attention to the area, beginning with the violent altercation between TMC supporters and Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials during a raid on Shahjahan’s residence. These protests intensified with accusations from local women of harassment by Shahjahan and his associates.
Mamata’s visit was also met with political critique, as Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari pointed out that the Chief Minister had failed to visit the area during the unrest. Adhikari is expected to visit Sandeshkhali on December 31.
