Mumbai: In a significant development for the global tea industry, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially recognized tea as a “healthy” beverage, marking a milestone for tea manufacturers worldwide, especially in India. The Indian Tea Association (ITA) announced on Friday that tea producers are now allowed to voluntarily label their products as “healthy,” following the FDA’s recent update to its nutrient content claims.
The FDA’s new rule, which updates the ‘healthy’ claim for beverages, states that all water, tea, and coffee containing fewer than 5 calories per serving and per Reference Amount Customarily Consumed (RACC) automatically qualify for the “healthy” designation. This update is seen as a major endorsement of tea’s nutritional value, particularly its low calorie content, making it an attractive option for health-conscious consumers.
In a press release, the ITA emphasized the significance of this recognition, noting that it aligns with growing scientific evidence supporting the numerous health benefits of tea. Rich in antioxidants, tea has long been linked to a variety of health advantages, including improved heart health and enhanced immunity.
“This decision underscores the numerous health benefits of tea and reinforces our commitment to promoting tea as a healthful beverage choice,” said the ITA. The association also expressed its excitement about this update, recognizing it as a key moment for Indian tea producers, who are eager to highlight the health advantages of their products in both domestic and international markets.
The new “healthy” labeling provides consumers with greater clarity and transparency, enabling them to make more informed decisions about their beverage choices. As global interest in healthy living continues to rise, the ITA views this recognition as an opportunity to further promote tea as a beneficial, enjoyable, and globally accepted beverage.
The Indian Tea Association also expressed its commitment to maintaining high-quality standards in tea production, ensuring that tea remains a cherished drink both within India and across the globe. With this official recognition from the FDA, tea is set to solidify its place as a healthful and sustainable beverage choice for millions worldwide.
