Mumbai: The left leaning Progressive Parties in Maharashtra have urged the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) to be more inclusive in its approach in seat-sharing with like-minded progressive parties in order to ensure defeat of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the November 20, legislative assembly elections in Maharashtra.
A three-point demand was made at a statewide convention organised by the progressive parties in Maharashtra at Pune on October 16, just a day after the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced November 20 as the polling date for Maharashtra.
The Pune convention sent the following clear three-point message:
1. Its primary aim is to ensure the resounding defeat of the BJP-led Mahayuti-NDA state government at all costs.
2. To ensure this, the MVA-INDIA bloc must clearly declare and implement pro-people alternative policies in all spheres.
3. The MVA must adopt an inclusive approach in seat-sharing with the progressive parties and give them their just share.
The large number of participants had been mobilised by the progressive parties from various districts of Maharashtra. But the lion’s share was no doubt the massive CPI (M)-led contingent from Solapur district.
The CPI(M) in Pune had made excellent preparations for the convention despite just one day’s notice.
The convention was addressed by Narasayya Adam, ex-MLA, and Vinod Nikole, MLA (CPI-M), Jayant Patil, ex-MLC (PWP), Subhash Lande (CPI), Anis Ahmed (SP), Ajit Patil (CPI-ML), Kishor Dhamale (SCP – Satyashodhak Communist Party), Shyam Gaikwad (Progressive Republican Party), and Medha Thatte (Lal Nishan Party). Dr Ashok Dhawale made the concluding speech.
Dr Uday Narkar introduced and conducted the proceedings. Ajit Abhyankar welcomed the participants and moved the condolence resolution paying homage to Sitaram Yechury and Buddhadeb Bhattacharya (CPI-M), Atul Kumar Anjan (CPI), and Meenakshi Patil (PWP).
The convention began with revolutionary songs by the Praja Natya Mandal from Solapur. The convention was presided over by Mariam Dhawale (CPI-M), Ram Baheti (CPI), Adv Raju Korde (PWP), Vithal Satav (SP), and R T Gavit (SCP).
Progressive literature worth over Rs 7,000 was briskly sold in the convention. It included the special issue of the CPI(M) state Marathi weekly ‘Jeewanmarg’ paying tribute to Sitaram Yechury.
