In a historic political shift, the Congress-National Conference (NC) pre-poll alliance has surged past the majority mark in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections. Jubilant celebrations erupted at the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference headquarters in Srinagar as party workers celebrated the alliance’s success on Tuesday.

According to the latest Election Commission of India (ECI) data, the National Conference (NC) has secured 28 seats and is leading in 13 more, while the Congress has won three seats and is leading in three others. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), despite initial predictions of a stronger performance, has claimed 17 seats and is ahead in 12 constituencies. Meanwhile, Mehbooba Mufti’s Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has won two seats and is leading in two others.

Omar Abdullah Secures Key Wins

NC vice president Omar Abdullah has clinched victory in the Budgam constituency, defeating PDP’s Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi by a margin of over 18,000 votes. Abdullah is also leading from Ganderbal by more than 10,000 votes, reinforcing his political strength in the region. In a statement, Omar Abdullah emphasized the alliance’s strong position to form the next government, warning the BJP against using “dirty tricks” to derail their path to governance.

His father, NC president Farooq Abdullah, expressed confidence that Omar Abdullah would become the next chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, stating that the victory sends a clear message of the people’s opposition to the abrogation of Article 370.

PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti Congratulates NC

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti extended her congratulations to the NC on their decisive victory. She also urged the central government to respect the electoral mandate and allow the new government to function without interference. However, her daughter, Iltija Mehbooba Mufti, who contested from the Bijbehara constituency, is trailing with 17,127 votes, 5,067 votes behind Bashir Ahmad Shah Veeri of the NC, who currently leads with 22,194 votes.

Sajad Lone Faces Mixed Results

Sajad Lone, president of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference (JKPC), is leading by over 700 votes in Handwara but trailing in Kupwara. Despite his stronghold in Handwara, the race in Kupwara remains uncertain.

Looking Ahead

As the results continue to be tallied, the Congress-NC alliance is edging closer to a definitive majority, while the BJP and other regional parties face a diminishing chance of securing power in Jammu and Kashmir. The new government, if led by Omar Abdullah, will likely mark a significant shift in the political landscape, as the alliance signals a strong rejection of the BJP’s previous policies, including the revocation of Article 370.

Political Implications

This election is being viewed as a referendum on the BJP’s governance in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in light of the controversial abrogation of Article 370. The strong performance of the NC-Congress alliance reflects widespread discontent with the BJP’s handling of the region and signals potential shifts in future national and regional policies.

The full list of winners and candidates leading the race across constituencies is a testament to the diverse political representation emerging from Jammu and Kashmir, with both seasoned leaders and new faces taking the stage in this historic election.
