Maharashtra Gears Up for Vidhansabha Elections: Congress and Allies Strategize to Keep BJP Out

With the Lok Sabha elections concluded, political alliances in Maharashtra are now setting their sights on the upcoming Vidhansabha elections. Both the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and Mahayuti alliances are ramping up preparations, holding meetings with office bearers, leaders, and grassroots party workers to assess their strengths and weaknesses. The Congress party, a key member of the MVA, is actively participating in these preparations.

Nana Patole, the Congress state president, emphasized the party’s commitment to organizational building across all 288 Vidhansabha seats, with a primary objective to prevent the BJP from retaining power in Maharashtra. Patole asserted that the MVA has a strong chance of winning the State Assembly elections, scheduled to take place in 4-5 months, provided seat sharing is based on merit within the alliance. He confirmed Congress’s intention to contest the elections as part of the MVA coalition.

Reflecting on the recent Lok Sabha elections, Patole highlighted that the Congress’s efforts in organizational building across all 48 seats had yielded positive results, benefiting the alliance parties within the MVA.

Patole criticized the BJP’s governance, alleging that the party had implemented several policies under the guise of helping farmers but had instead misappropriated crores of rupees. He accused the current Chief Minister of financial misconduct, including purchasing goods through the DBT policy without inviting tenders, and claimed that the Mahayuti alliance had misused funds meant for farmers while taking loans using PWD lands as collateral. Patole vowed to question the government about these issues in the upcoming Vidhansabha session.

Addressing the discontent of Chhagan Bhujbal within the Mahayuti alliance, Patole remarked on the BJP’s historical neglect of OBC communities. He cited Bhujbal’s treatment by the BJP, pointing out that he was jailed by the party in the past and is now being embraced by them, highlighting the party’s opportunistic approach to OBC votes.

Patole also commented on the NEET examination controversy, describing it as a scam affecting 24 lakh students across India. He criticized the Union government’s handling of the issue and called for a CBI inquiry to ensure accountability.

As Maharashtra’s political landscape heats up, the coming months will see intensified efforts by all parties to secure their positions and sway voter sentiment ahead of the crucial Vidhansabha elections.
