A team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) came under attack in Bhupatinagar, located in East Midnapore district of West Bengal, on Saturday morning. The officials had gone there to investigate a blast case from 2022 at the residence of a Trinamool Congress party leader.
As per initial information, locals surrounded the NIA team’s vehicle and threw bricks at it, damaging the windshield. This incident happened around 5:30 am. The NIA has stated that one of their officers suffered injuries in the attack, according to a senior police official.
Earlier in the morning, the NIA team had arrested two individuals connected to the case and was returning to Kolkata when the attack took place, news agency PTI reported.
The NIA has filed a police complaint regarding this incident. A large contingent of central police forces has now reached Bhupatinagar, where the NIA team along with the two arrested persons is present, police sources said.
The attack is related to an explosion that occurred on December 3, 2022, at a thatched house in Bhupatinagar, which killed three people. Last month, the NIA had summoned eight Trinamool Congress leaders for questioning in connection with this blast case.
The Trinamool Congress party has accused the BJP of being behind the NIA’s move to summon its leaders. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh claimed that the opposition BJP provided the NIA with a list of TMC leaders from Purba Medinipur district, with plans to arrest them.
This incident comes two months after a team from the Enforcement Directorate was attacked when they went to raid the residence of a suspended local TMC leader linked to the ration distribution scam in West Bengal.
