Warning against arm-twisting tactics, Nirupam advocates for strategic decision-making in Mumbai seat allocation

As political tensions escalate in Maharashtra ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam sounded a cautionary note on Saturday, urging his party to resist pressure tactics employed by the Shiv Sena (UBT) in seat allocation negotiations. Nirupam’s remarks come in the wake of the Shiv Sena’s announcement of 17 candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections, including four seats in Mumbai, a move that has stirred unease among coalition partners.

Expressing apprehension over the Sena’s ability to secure victories independently, Nirupam emphasized the pivotal role of Congress support in the electoral equation. “The Sena (UBT) is not in a position to win any seat without Congress’ support,” he asserted, highlighting the strategic leverage wielded by the Congress within the alliance framework.

The Sena’s unilateral decision to field candidates without finalizing seat-sharing agreements with coalition partners has raised eyebrows within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, comprising the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), and Shiv Sena. With negotiations yet to reach a consensus, tensions simmer amidst concerns over equitable distribution of seats.

Nirupam, a vocal critic of the Sena’s tactics, warned against capitulating to pressure tactics and urged the Congress leadership to assert its stance firmly. “The Congress should not come under the threat of Shiv Sena (UBT),” he admonished, cautioning against conceding ground without adequate deliberation. He condemned the Sena’s alleged coercion tactics, characterizing them as detrimental to the Congress’ interests and detrimental to the party’s prospects in Mumbai.

Drawing attention to the contentious Mumbai North-West seat, Nirupam underscored the need for strategic decision-making to navigate through the electoral minefield. He expressed readiness to engage in friendly contests if necessary, signaling a willingness to confront the Sena head-on in disputed constituencies.

The announcement of Amol Kirtikar’s candidature for the Mumbai North-West seat by the Shiv Sena further exacerbated tensions, with Nirupam lamenting the encroachment on Congress turf. His discontent reflects broader concerns within the party regarding the Sena’s aggressive posturing and its implications for the Congress’ electoral fortunes in Mumbai.

As the political chessboard continues to evolve, Nirupam’s admonition serves as a clarion call for strategic acumen and unwavering resolve in navigating the complexities of coalition politics. With the Lok Sabha polls looming large, the Congress faces a critical juncture, where decisions made today will shape the contours of Maharashtra’s political landscape for years to come.
