Bollywood lyricist Manoj Muntashir finds himself at the center of a storm of controversy following his involvement in the mythological epic “Adipurush.” In a recent interview with Zoom, Muntashir candidly expressed his deep regret over the dialogues he penned for the film, admitting that it has caused him “unbearable pain.”

The 48-year-old lyricist took full responsibility for the controversial dialogues, stating, “If given a choice and if I could go back in the timeline, I may not write dialogues for Adipurush. It has given me unbearable pain. Though no one else is responsible for it. I take complete onus.”

Directed by Om Raut, “Adipurush” made its theatrical debut in June 2023, garnering a mixed reception from audiences and critics. While the film faced criticism for its visual effects, script, and direction, it was Muntashir’s dialogues that attracted the most intense scrutiny.

Social media platforms became a battleground of criticism, with netizens and industry insiders alike condemning the colloquial dialogues featured in the film. The backlash prompted the makers to swiftly revise the problematic dialogues within a week of the film’s release, aiming to salvage the film’s reputation.

In an earlier attempt to defend his creative choices, Muntashir revealed that he deliberately simplified the dialogues to create a distinction between characters. However, his explanation did little to quell accusations of plagiarism, particularly concerning a dialogue attributed to the character of Hanuman, portrayed by Devdatta Nage. Critics pointed out similarities between the dialogue and an old video featuring a spiritual leader, further fueling the controversy.

This isn’t the first time Muntashir has faced allegations of plagiarism, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing debate surrounding his contributions to “Adipurush.” As the controversy continues to unfold, it underscores the challenges and responsibilities faced by artists in the creative process and the impact of their work on audiences and cultural discourse.

The fallout from Muntashir’s involvement in “Adipurush” serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between artistic expression and ethical responsibility in the realm of filmmaking, raising important questions about accountability and integrity in the industry.
