In a surprising development, the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has announced its decision to field senior leader Praful Patel for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election, despite Patel having four years remaining in his current term. The party’s Maharashtra unit chief, Sunil Tatkare, attributed this decision to “technical issues.” Patel, who currently serves as the NCP’s working president, will resign from his existing membership of the House after being elected and will take oath afresh.
This announcement comes just before the Maharashtra Speaker is set to announce a decision on disqualification petitions filed by conflicting NCP factions following Ajit Pawar’s split from the party last year. These recent political maneuvers, including Ajit Pawar’s expressed desire to resign as Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly and work for the party organization, have sparked speculations about significant changes within the NCP, reflecting internal power dynamics and factionalism within the party.
The decision to field Patel for the Rajya Sabha election and Ajit Pawar’s expressed desire to resign from his current position have raised questions about the future direction of the NCP. These developments occur in the context of ongoing internal power struggles and the party’s preparations for the upcoming elections.
