In a surprising turn of events, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif, long considered a frontrunner for the position of Prime Minister of Pakistan, has instead nominated his brother, former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, to lead the next coalition government. The announcement came through the party spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb, who also revealed that Nawaz’s daughter and PML-N’s senior vice president, Maryam Nawaz, has been designated for the post of Punjab Chief Minister.

The decision to nominate Shehbaz Sharif for the top executive position reflects a strategic move by the PML-N amidst a political landscape characterized by a hung parliament. Following Thursday’s elections, Pakistan found itself in a situation where no single party commands a clear majority. However, the combined strength of the parties led by Sharif and former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is sufficient to form a new coalition government.

While the political arena witnesses these maneuvers, supporters of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have taken to the streets in nationwide protests, alleging widespread rigging in the general elections held on February 8. The protests underscore the deep-seated political divisions and tensions prevalent in the country.

Amidst these developments, calls for transparency and respect for the democratic process have emerged not only domestically but also internationally. The White House weighed in on the matter, emphasizing the need for Pakistan to uphold the will of the people and ensure a transparent election process. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, addressing reporters at her daily news conference on Tuesday, stated that US President Joe Biden is cognizant of the situation, highlighting the importance of democratic norms and procedures.

As Pakistan navigates through this period of political uncertainty and transition, the decisions made by its leaders will shape the course of its governance and democracy. The eyes of the nation and the international community remain focused on the unfolding events, awaiting the outcome of coalition negotiations and the resolution of electoral grievances.
