As Mumbai grapples with sweltering temperatures, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the city is unlikely to witness a significant dip in mercury levels, signaling the end of winter.
According to experts, the transition phase from winter has commenced, with some suggesting that Mumbai’s winter has already concluded.
On Tuesday, the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius, which is two degrees above normal. Meanwhile, the minimum temperatures stood at 21 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal, at the Santacruz station. The Colaba coastal observatory registered a minimum temperature of 22.2 degrees Celsius.
Sushma Nair, a scientist from IMD Mumbai, explained to Indian Express that the current high temperatures in Mumbai are due to easterly winds. She noted that while there may be a slight dip, temperatures are unlikely to see a significant change and will continue to hover around the current range.
An unnamed official mentioned that although there is no official date for the end of winters, there is no major drop expected, indicating the conclusion of the winter season.
Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather Service echoed similar sentiments, stating that there is unlikely to be any dip in temperatures now. He remarked that Mumbai experienced a very mild winter season, which is now nearly over. Palawat emphasized that Mumbaikars should not anticipate any significant drop in temperatures at this point.
Explaining the meteorological factors at play, Palawat mentioned that the western disturbances responsible for snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir have cleared, but the northerlies are not flowing into Mumbai due to an anticyclone in Maharashtra, near Vidharbha. Consequently, the prevailing winds are predominantly south easterlies, contributing to the current warm weather conditions in the city.
