Anurag Thakur, Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, announced that the Union Cabinet has given its nod to an extra subsidy of Rs 200 for a 14 kg LPG cylinder under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. This decision was made during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee for Economic Affairs. Consequently, the total subsidy per cylinder for Ujjwala scheme beneficiaries has been raised to Rs 400.

In addition to the subsidy increment, the government has also granted approval for an extra 75 lakh Ujjwala connections, which will increase the total number of beneficiaries covered by the PM Ujjwala scheme to 10.35 crores.

The Ujjwala Scheme, designed to provide clean cooking fuel to households, has been augmented with an allocation of 7.5 million new gas connections.

Effective immediately, the supplementary subsidy of Rs 200 per LPG cylinder is projected to have a fiscal impact of Rs 7,680 crores during the fiscal year 2023-24, as per Anurag Thakur.

Currently, the cost of a domestic LPG cylinder is Rs 1053 in Delhi, Rs 1052.50 in Mumbai, Rs 1068.50 in Chennai, and Rs 1079 in Kolkata. It is noteworthy that oil marketing companies implemented a Rs 50 increase in the price of domestic LPG cylinders in July, following two prior hikes in May.
