In Tamil Nadu, Five persons were killed and more than ten injured when fire broke out in a cracker shop at Shankarapuram, in Kallakurichi district last night. Initial inquiries by the police revealed that the fire began at the wholesale cracker shop and later spread to the godown and nearby eateries resulting in explosion of gas cylinders. Fire tenders were called from nearby areas to extinguish the fire after three hours .
The death toll in the accident is expected to rise as many have been seriously wounded. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has announced an ex gratia of Rs.5 lakh to each of the family members who died in the accident. He also announced one lakh to those wounded and undergoing treatment in intensive care ward.
