At least 10 people have been injured in a stampede during a cultural function at the ‘Malyabanta Mahostav’ in Odisha’s Malkangiri district, police said Wednesday.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening at the DNK Ground here, they said.

There was a huge rush of around 40,000 people at the venue, which has a capacity to accommodate close to 20,000 people, police said.

Three people, including a woman, suffered critical injuries, but their condition is stated to be stable, they said. All the injured have been admitted to the district headquarters hospital here.

The ‘Malyabanta Mohastav’ is being organised in the district after a gap of two years due to the Covid pandemic, officials said.

The Malkangiri incident is the third such accident in the state in the last one week.

On January 15, two devotees were injured in a mini-stampede at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, while a day earlier, at least one woman died and 20 others were injured in another stampede on the Gopinathpur-Badamba T-Bridge in Athagarh, Cuttack, the officials said.
