Russian President Vladimir Putin has clinched a landslide victory in the recent presidential election, according to the announcement made by Russia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) on Monday. With 100% of polling stations reporting, Putin received an overwhelming 87.28% of all votes cast during the March 15-17 voting period.

Putin’s triumph was widely anticipated, as his major opponents were either deceased, imprisoned, or living in exile. Moreover, the Kremlin’s crackdown on public dissent regarding the war in Ukraine has intensified, further solidifying Putin’s position.

CEC head Ella Pamfilova revealed that the voter turnout for the 2024 presidential election reached a historic high of 87.1 million, representing 77.44% of eligible voters.

In the final election results, Communist candidate Nikolai Kharitonov secured the second position with 4.31% of the vote. New People candidate Vladislav Davankov and nationalist Leonid Slutsky trailed behind with 3.85% and 3.20% of the vote, respectively.

The CEC is set to present the official election results on Thursday.
