With Donald Trump’s re-election as the 47th President of the United States now secured, speculation is rife over the potential shake-up in the global political landscape. Trump’s “America First” agenda, which marked his previous presidency from 2016-2020, left lasting impacts on U.S. alliances and policies that may now return with renewed vigor, bringing both hope and trepidation to different corners of the world. While Trump’s return is anticipated to strengthen India-U.S. ties, it signals potential trouble for China and renewed unpredictability for the global order.

Trump’s Potential Foreign Policy Reset

Trump’s re-election could significantly impact NATO and other international alliances. His earlier presidency frequently questioned the value of NATO, urging allies to “pay their fair share” and signaling a shift away from multilateral commitments. Analysts predict that under Trump, the U.S. might deprioritize its defense commitments in Europe, potentially weakening the West’s stance against Russia amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

Russian President Vladimir Putin may be among those welcoming Trump’s return, as Trump has openly criticized Biden’s aid to Ukraine and pledged during his campaign to stop the Ukraine war “in one day.” Putin’s hopes of furthering Russian ambitions in Ukraine may rest on the possibility that Trump will reduce or altogether cease military aid to Kyiv, potentially leaving Ukraine vulnerable and altering the course of the conflict.

China’s Strategic Calculations

Meanwhile, Beijing is wary yet optimistic about a Trump presidency, predicting it could work to China’s advantage by further isolating the U.S. on the world stage. Trump’s unilateral approach and his strained relations with traditional allies could open opportunities for China to fill power vacuums in regions distancing themselves from the United States. Chinese state-controlled media has forecasted that Trump’s return may drive other nations towards China, broadening Beijing’s influence.

During his first term, Trump’s tough stance on China led to a trade war and increased tariffs, but his diplomatic unpredictability could now benefit China by pushing the U.S. into a more isolationist stance, particularly in Asia-Pacific regions.

Strengthening India-U.S. Relations

For India, Trump’s re-election may be a promising turn. The rapport between Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, visible in events like the “Howdy Modi” rally in 2019, signals a possible boost to India-U.S. strategic ties. While the Biden administration supported India’s import of Russian oil despite sanctions, Trump’s softer stance on Russia could ease any pressure on India to alter its approach, maintaining a stable pathway for India to prioritize its national interests.

Although the Trump administration did not approve India’s request for advanced military technologies, such as the electromagnetic aircraft launch system, experts suggest that Trump’s return could mark an improvement in defense cooperation, with a focus on balancing China’s influence in the region.

A Mixed Picture for Global Stability

Trump’s re-election poses a complicated picture for the world. His policies may bring India and the U.S. closer, yet his unpredictable approach risks straining U.S. relations with NATO allies and reshaping U.S.-China dynamics. For nations relying on U.S. support or stability within the American-led global order, Trump’s presidency brings uncertainty, sparking both opportunities and challenges for global leaders navigating this new political chapter.
