The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, announced on Monday the commencement of consultations regarding the appointment of a UN envoy tasked with coordinating engagement between Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government and the international community.
Speaking at a press conference, Guterres revealed that representatives from the Taliban did not respond to an invitation to attend a meeting of international envoys to Afghanistan, which he had convened in Doha on Sunday and Monday.
Despite the absence of Taliban officials, Guterres expressed his hope that they would participate in future meetings of a similar nature.
