In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India has issued a stern directive to the State Bank of India (SBI), instructing it to provide comprehensive information regarding electoral bonds to the Election Commission. The apex court has mandated the submission of all relevant bond details, including unique bond numbers, by March 21, emphasizing that the bank must not be selective in its disclosure.
A five-judge bench, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, underscored the importance of transparency in electoral processes, emphasizing that the SBI should not withhold any pertinent information. Senior advocate Harish Salve, representing the SBI, affirmed the bank’s willingness to comply with the court’s directive, dispelling any notion of reluctance. Furthermore, the Supreme Court underscored the imperative for the SBI to submit an affidavit affirming that no information has been suppressed—a move aimed at fostering trust and confidence in the electoral process.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, reiterated the government’s commitment to combating black money in politics through the electoral bonds scheme. He highlighted the need to address the dissemination of misinformation and the proliferation of malicious social media posts aimed at undermining the judiciary’s integrity.
In response, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud reaffirmed the judiciary’s unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and the principles enshrined in the Constitution. Emphasizing the judiciary’s resilience in the face of external scrutiny, he reiterated the court’s dedication to impartially enforcing its directives for the betterment of society.
