In the wake of the recent assembly election results in Jammu and Kashmir, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti has issued a stark warning to the Central government against interference in the future governance of the region. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Mufti emphasized that the election outcomes serve as a clear message from the electorate: they do not want “horse-trading” by the Centre.

Mufti articulated her concerns, stating, “If the BJP-led Centre meddles in Jammu and Kashmir, it will be disastrous for them. If they do that, it will be disastrous and worse than what has happened to them now.” Her comments reflect a broader sentiment among regional parties, emphasizing the need for a stable government free from external influences.

She further asserted that the voters had decisively opted for the National Conference-Congress alliance, signaling their desire for a stable administration to counter the BJP’s influence. “I think that is the biggest reason for the victory of the NC-Congress alliance,” Mufti said.

While the PDP faced a significant decline in its electoral performance—winning only three seats compared to 28 in the previous assembly elections in 2014—Mufti remained resolute about her party’s role in the political landscape. “We are not at a low. We are in a fight everywhere. Who is fighting the NC? Who gave a challenge to the CM face in Ganderbal and Budgam? It is the PDP. We are a force to reckon with. We may be down, but we are not out,” she asserted.

Mufti’s remarks come as the region faces ongoing political challenges and calls for greater autonomy. Her warning to the Centre underscores the fragile nature of governance in Jammu and Kashmir and highlights the importance of respecting the electorate’s choices.

As the political dynamics evolve in the Union Territory, the PDP’s role as a constructive opposition will be pivotal in shaping the future of Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape.
