Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has formally approached the Union government seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the plane crash that led to the death of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar last month. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the decision was taken to ensure transparency and remove all suspicions surrounding the incident.
The request for a central investigation was conveyed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah ahead of the state legislature’s budget session. The government said multiple agencies are already involved, but a CBI inquiry would further strengthen public confidence.
Multiple Agencies Conducting Parallel Investigations
Apart from the proposed CBI probe, investigations are currently being carried out by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the state Criminal Investigation Department. Officials confirmed that aviation safety procedures, flight records, and operational compliance are being thoroughly examined.
The chartered aircraft, a Learjet 45, crashed while attempting to land near Baramati in Pune district on January 28. Ajit Pawar and four other passengers lost their lives in the accident.
Questions Raised Over Aircraft Ownership and Safety Records
Concerns were raised by NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar regarding the circumstances of the crash. He demanded deeper scrutiny of the company that owned the aircraft and sought accountability at the highest level until the investigation concludes.
The state government clarified that the aviation regulator is conducting a detailed audit of the aircraft-owning firm, including verification of maintenance records, logbooks, and compliance history.
Government Urges Patience as Investigation Continues
The chief minister said speculation should be avoided until official findings are released. He added that the investigation is not just about accountability but also about ensuring future safety for public representatives who frequently travel by air.
Senior leaders pointed out that the aircraft involved had been used earlier by several political leaders, reinforcing the need for a credible and comprehensive probe.
