Mumbai: Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) leader and Babasaheb Ambedkar’s grandson Prakash Ambedkar has opposed the construction of the huge statue of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar at the memorial site at Indu Mill near Shivaji Park’, Dadar.
Prakash Ambedkar had yesterday stated “I oppose building of the huge statue. Instead of spending huge sums on the memorial use, spend the same on treatment of patients suffering from Covid-19”.
Meanwhile Janata Dal – Secular (JD-S) has welcomed Ambedkar’s view on the Indu Mill memorial. “No matter how big they built the memorial of Ambedkar it won’t match up to Babasaheb’s body of work and stature,” said state JD-S president Sharad Patil in a statement issued here on Sunday.

“Therefore, to truly build a huge world class memorial, an institute called “Dr. Ambedkar School of Economics” should be built and in front of this institute a huge statue of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar must be made” added JD-S statement.
In this place of Indu Mill and on the lines of London School of Economics (LSE) and world class Institute which teaches Economics, Research and Education should be built demanded JD-S state chief Sharad Patil, National Secretary and former high court judge B G Kolse Patil, general secretary Pratap Hogade and spokesperson Prabhakar Narkar.
Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar is revered by the masses for his contribution in framing of the Indian Constitution. But he was also a great Economist in fact he was the first Indian to get a PhD in Economics. He had deeply studied British Empire’s economic functioning.
Administration and Finance of East India Company, The Evolution of Public Finance in British India and The Problem of Rupees: It’s Original and Solution, are some of his great books written on Economics.
Considering this background it will be a great idea to build an international level Economic Research centre and Educational institute in the name of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. Recently geniuses in economics such as Amartya Sen and Abhijeet Banerjee got Nobel Prize due to their immense contribution in the field of economic research. Therefore such an institute will go a long way in passing out such intelligent students from such an institute and that Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s name will spread world over, stated the JD-S statement.
