In a recent announcement, the Election Commission has revised the counting dates for the assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. Initially slated for June 4, 2024, the counting of votes in these states will now take place on June 2, 2024. The decision to alter the counting schedule was made in consideration of the impending end of the assembly tenures in both states.
Arunachal Pradesh is set to witness polling for its 60 assembly seats, with the first phase scheduled for April 19. The Election Commission will issue notifications for the elections on March 20, with nomination forms being accepted until March 27. Following the scrutiny of applications on March 28, candidates will have until March 30 to withdraw their nominations. Given that the tenure of the Arunachal Pradesh assembly concludes on June 2, the counting of votes needed to be completed by that date.
Similarly, Sikkim will see voting for its 32 assembly seats commencing on April 19. The notification process will mirror that of Arunachal Pradesh, with nominations accepted until March 27 and withdrawals permitted until March 30. With the assembly term also concluding on June 2, the Election Commission opted to reschedule the counting of votes in Sikkim to align with the deadline.
The Election Commission’s decision underscores its commitment to conducting elections in accordance with constitutional timelines and ensuring a smooth transition of power. By adjusting the counting dates for Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, the Commission aims to uphold the integrity and efficiency of the electoral process.
As the electoral landscape continues to evolve, voters and stakeholders in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim can anticipate an expedited declaration of election results, paving the way for the formation of new assemblies and the democratic governance of these states.
