The Nandurbar Civil Hospital in Maharashtra has recently grappled with a deeply troubling surge in child mortality, with a staggering 179 children reported to have lost their lives in the past three months. This distressing situation has drawn significant attention, underscoring a critical healthcare challenge in the region.

Data provided by Nandurbar’s Chief Medical Officer, M Sawan Kumar, has revealed shocking statistics. In July, the hospital recorded 75 child deaths, a number that alarmingly increased to 86 in August. Regrettably, September has seen an additional 18 fatalities reported so far.

Several factors have been identified as contributing to these tragic child deaths. Low birth weight, birth asphyxia, sepsis, and respiratory diseases have emerged as the primary causes. Of particular concern is the fact that a substantial 70% of these deaths involve infants aged 0-28 days.

Kumar further pointed out that many women in the region suffer from sickle cell disease, which can lead to complications during childbirth, exacerbating the situation.

Recognizing the urgent need to address these healthcare challenges and save young lives, authorities in Nandurbar have initiated a crucial program known as ‘Mission Lakshya 84 Days.’ This mission aims to address the root causes of child mortality, enhance healthcare services, and provide timely interventions to increase the chances of infant survival.

‘Mission Lakshya 84 Days’ represents a multi-pronged approach to combat child mortality. It focuses on improving prenatal and postnatal care, enhancing healthcare infrastructure, and offering specialized care for infants at risk. Additionally, community awareness and education programs are being launched to empower parents with the knowledge and resources needed to ensure the well-being of their children.

The Nandurbar community, along with healthcare professionals and local authorities, is coming together to confront this critical issue and reduce child mortality rates. The success of ‘Mission Lakshya 84 Days’ will undoubtedly have a profound impact on the lives of countless children and their families, offering hope for a brighter and healthier future.
