In a significant development shaping the political landscape of Uttar Pradesh before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Congress and Samajwadi Party have finalized a seat-sharing agreement. The formal announcement of this alliance is scheduled for Wednesday, to be made at a joint press conference by leaders from both parties.

Under the agreed-upon formula, the Samajwadi Party has agreed to cede the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat to the Congress, withdrawing its candidate from the constituency. Additionally, the Samajwadi Party has shown willingness to accommodate the Congress’s request for the Shravasti Lok Sabha seat instead of Agra or Bulandshahr.

Reports indicate that Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi played a pivotal role in negotiating the seat-sharing deal with the Samajwadi Party. Priyanka Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, held a telephonic conversation where they mutually agreed to contest the Lok Sabha polls together.

Akhilesh Yadav confirmed the alliance with Congress in Uttar Pradesh during interactions with the press earlier today. He affirmed that the alliance announcement would be made imminently.

A joint press conference is scheduled for 5 p.m. today at the Fortune Hotel in Lucknow, where senior leaders from both parties will be present. Among them are Congress leaders Avinash Pandey and Ajay Rai, along with Samajwadi Party’s Rajendra Chaudhary. Reports suggest that Congress will contest 17 out of the total 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.

The Lok Sabha elections are anticipated to be conducted in multiple phases, likely spanning from April to May. With this alliance between the Congress and Samajwadi Party, Uttar Pradesh politics is poised for a significant shift as both parties aim to consolidate their positions and challenge the incumbent political landscape.
