In a chilling case that shocked the nation, a couple in China has been executed for the heinous act of throwing their two children from the 15th floor of a high-rise apartment in Chongqing. The execution of Zhang Bo and his girlfriend, Ye Chengchen, took place on January 31, marking the culmination of a tragic saga that began in 2020.
The disturbing crime drew widespread condemnation across China when it came to light. Zhang and Ye, driven by their relationship and a desire to eliminate what they saw as “obstacles,” plotted and carried out the murder of Zhang’s two-year-old daughter and one-year-old son.
The gruesome details reveal a chilling premeditation. Zhang, who was having an affair with Ye, kept his children a secret from her, knowing that she had made it clear she would not stay with him if he had kids. When she discovered the truth, Ye deemed the children a hindrance to their future together, according to court documents.
In early 2020, the couple began planning the murders, discussing the method via WeChat, a popular Chinese messaging service. They devised a plan to stage the deaths as accidents, and in November 2020, Zhang carried out the horrific act in the absence of their mother, Chen Meilin.
After a trial in December 2021, a court in Chongqing sentenced Zhang and Ye to death for intentional murder. Despite their appeals, the Supreme People’s Court, China’s highest judicial authority, upheld the verdict, leading to their execution on January 31.
The case garnered significant attention on Chinese social media platforms, with an old photo of Zhang purportedly grieving after his children’s deaths resurfacing and sparking discussions about the nature of justice and the severity of the crime.
