In a big political development ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced the seat-sharing formula of the National Democratic Alliance.

Under the agreement:

  • Bharatiya Janata Party will contest 89 seats
  • Asom Gana Parishad will contest 26 seats
  • Bodoland People’s Front will contest 11 seats

The announcement came after a key preliminary BJP meeting held in New Delhi, with Sarma confirming that the final agreement will be sealed after a Parliamentary Board meeting.

When Will BJP Announce Candidate List for Assam Elections?

Sarma said that the BJP is in the final stages of preparing its candidate list and is expected to announce it very soon.

“Today, we had preliminary discussions regarding our party list. Tomorrow is our Parliamentary Board meeting. I think the list will be announced late tomorrow night or the next morning,” he stated.

Will Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi Join BJP?

Responding to speculation about Pradyut Bordoloi possibly switching sides, Sarma said he is not personally in touch with the Congress leader.

However, he hinted that discussions cannot be ruled out.

“I am not in touch with Pradyut Bordoloi. If he had spoken to the Union Home Minister, I would know, but I don’t think he has spoken to any BJP leader yet. There is a possibility that we can have contact,” Sarma said.

How Does This Seat Sharing Compare to 2021 Assam Elections?

In the 2021 Assembly elections:

  • BJP contested 93 seats and won 60
  • AGP contested 29 seats and won 9
  • United People’s Party Liberal contested 11 seats and won 6

Overall, the NDA secured 75 seats in the 126-member Assembly, forming the government.

With the new seat-sharing formula now out and candidate announcements expected soon, the Assam election battle is set to intensify in the coming days.
