The ADR’s petition also seeks to enhance the transparency of the VVPAT process by making the glass of the VVPAT machine transparent and extending the duration of the light, allowing voters to witness the recording and dropping of their votes into the drop box. This measure, they argue, would instill greater confidence in the electoral system and alleviate concerns about potential discrepancies or tampering.

The controversy surrounding EVMs and VVPATs has been a recurring issue during elections, with political parties across the ideological spectrum raising concerns about the potential for tampering and the reliability of the machines. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party in Tamil Nadu has also thrown its weight behind the legal challenge, filing a petition in the Madras High Court to challenge the design of the third-generation M3 Electronic Voting Machines, citing potential discrepancies and corrupt practices.
