National Capital has today entered into 4th week of its lockdown. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced yesterday that the National Capital Territory will have to remain under a strict lockdown for another week till 5 AM, next Monday. The measures announced for the current lockdown includes complete shut down of Metro rail services and restraining orders not allowing marriages at public places or even in Banquet halls or hotels. Amidst these curbs AIR correspondent takes a look at the silver lining visible after almost three weeks of lockdown.
As the second wave of COVID-19 grappled the nation, several states and union territories were left with no option other than to impose lockdown and curfews in order to stop the chain of transmission. As of today, more than three fourth of the States are under strict lockdown. Remaining few have also imposed partial regulatory measures. At a time when the Centre and States are handling both the vaccination drive and covid containment measures, the lockdown period has given them a short duration to ramp up the health infrastructure.
Meanwhile, due to strict containment strategies and synergy of the Centre and the State, the Recovery Rate of COVID patients both nationally and in Delhi has shown considerable improvement. The positivity rate in the National Capital which had zoomed at around 35 per cent during mid April has come down to nearly 21 per cent with significant decrease in the fatality rates as well. The next few days will be very crucial as to determine the further course of action by the Governments as they may consider switching to making smaller district specific containment zones rather than a State-wide curfew which is also likely to take a toll on the health of the economy in this quarter.
