Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has crossed a historic digital landmark, becoming the first serving world leader to surpass 100 million followers on Instagram. The achievement underlines his massive online presence and the growing influence of social media in modern political communication.
A Decade of Digital Growth
Since joining Instagram in 2014, Modi’s account has steadily expanded into one of the most followed political profiles globally. His posts range from official meetings and international summits to cultural celebrations, behind-the-scenes moments, and personal reflections. This blend of governance updates and human-interest content has helped him cultivate a strong connection with users across age groups, particularly younger audiences.
Digital analysts say his consistent engagement strategy and frequent updates have played a key role in building this following. Unlike traditional press briefings, Instagram allows leaders to communicate directly with citizens in a visual and interactive format.
Far Ahead of Global Counterparts
With over 100 million followers, Modi currently leads all global political figures on the platform. US President Donald Trump trails behind with approximately 43 million followers. Other prominent leaders remain significantly lower in comparison.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has around 15 million followers, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva about 14 million, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan close to 11 million, and Argentine President Javier Milei roughly 6 million. Even when combined, their totals fall short of Modi’s individual following.
Dominance in India’s Political Space
The Prime Minister also maintains a commanding lead domestically. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has over 16 million followers, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has around 12 million—both significantly behind Modi’s tally.
Social Media as a Political Tool
The milestone reflects a broader transformation in political outreach. Platforms like Instagram have evolved into powerful channels for shaping public perception, mobilising support, and maintaining visibility beyond conventional media coverage.
For Modi, digital engagement remains central to his communication strategy. His ability to leverage visual storytelling and real-time updates has not only amplified his domestic appeal but also strengthened his global digital footprint.
