Mumbai experienced another day of turmoil on Friday, September 27, due to heavy rains that have swept the city over the past week. As the monsoon season begins to withdraw, the city saw significant rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for Friday. The aftermath of the relentless downpour was felt throughout the city, with alarming reports of infrastructure damage and injuries.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city witnessed 25 tree branches collapse during the downpour, injuring three individuals. In a particularly alarming incident reported by the BMC at 6:01 PM, a tree fell on a taxi near Vitthal Mandir in Rani Laxmi Chowk, injuring three men who were subsequently rushed to Sion Hospital. While one remains hospitalized for further treatment, the other two received necessary medical attention and have been discharged.

In addition to the tree falls, the BMC documented 11 short circuit incidents and 8 wall collapses across the city on Friday. Thankfully, no injuries were reported from these incidents. As of Saturday morning, the BMC noted that the eastern suburbs received 47.07 mm of rainfall, the western suburbs saw 44.67 mm, and the city itself recorded 43.68 mm in the last 24 hours. The total average rainfall this monsoon season has already exceeded the annual average, with Colaba observatory recording 2,633.6 mm and Santacruz observatory reaching 3,068 mm of rainfall.

Despite the challenges, Mumbaikars woke up to a cloudy atmosphere on Saturday, with light rains reported in isolated areas. The IMD forecasts moderate rainfall for the city today, and the yellow alert for Mumbai and Thane has been downgraded to green, suggesting a lower likelihood of rainfall. Similarly, districts such as Palghar, Raigad, and Pune, which were under an orange alert, have also seen their warnings reduced, signaling a transition to more manageable weather conditions.

The relentless rain has tested the resilience of Mumbai’s infrastructure and its citizens, but with the weather improving, residents hope for a swift recovery and return to normalcy. As always, the city’s disaster management teams remain on high alert, prepared to respond to any further incidents stemming from the unpredictable monsoon season.
