Srinagar: Expressing concern over the non-availability of timber at depots at Handwara, Block Development Council (BDC) Chairman, Langate, Showket Hussain Pandith on Tuesday warned the forest department that “if the timber was not made available at these forest depots within a week, he would not allow any vehicle to transport timber from the district.”

BDC Chairman Langate Showket Hussain Pandith said that the poor people of the sub-division are facing tremendous hardships in the absence of timber at depots. He said, “the non-availability of timber is also forcing people to smuggle.”

Pandith said that scores of people have completed their residential houses under IAY/PMAY schemes in the area and are yet to complete the rooftops of their homes, resulting in the people facing problems.

He has urged the head of the forest department to look into the matter at the earliest.
