TMC MP Saket Gokhale, representing Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress in the Rajya Sabha, reiterated his claims on Sunday (August 20) that the BJP was exploiting the CBI, a prominent investigative agency, to target political rivals in light of the recent removal of the Interpol red-corner notice against fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi. Choksi stands accused in the ₹13,500-crore Punjab National Bank Loan Case.
Gokhale took aim at the CBI for its lack of action in challenging Interpol’s decision to remove the red-corner notice against Choksi. He pointed out, “CBI had initially stated its intention to appeal with INTERPOL regarding this removal. It has been half a year, yet both the Modi Government and the CBI have maintained a conspicuous silence on this matter. There have been no indications of progress or updates on the purported appeal.”
He went on to assert, “It’s evident that the CBI has seemingly transformed into a partisan tool utilized solely by the BJP to target opposition figures. While the Modi Government directs the CBI against political adversaries, it seemingly shows leniency towards Mehul Choksi, who has been implicated in a 14,000-crore scam. This leniency allows him to evade the grasp of the law with apparent ease.”
Gokhale further highlighted Choksi’s position as the foremost name among deliberate defaulters in India, emphasizing that the withdrawal of the notice implies Choksi can now traverse the globe with the exception of India, avoiding legal consequences.
