Turbulence brews within the Congress party as reports emerge of six out of 43 Congress MLAs abstaining from a crucial meeting of the Congress Legislature Party. This unexpected absence has sparked speculation that these MLAs may be contemplating a defection to either the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), signaling potential shifts in Maharashtra’s political landscape.
Among the notable absentees are Aslam Shaikh, a former minister with close ties to Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of the BJP, and Zeeshan Siddique, whose father, Baba Siddique, recently defected to the NCP. Their absence from the meeting raises eyebrows and fuels conjecture about their allegiances.
The political maneuvering intensifies amidst efforts by Fadnavis to fracture the Congress party, following his successful recruitment of senior Congress leader Ashok Chavan. Chavan’s defection to the BJP was hailed as a significant victory for Fadnavis, who wasted no time in welcoming him into the saffron fold. Within days of joining the BJP, Chavan was rewarded with a coveted Rajya Sabha ticket, signaling the BJP’s eagerness to consolidate its influence in Maharashtra.
Despite expectations that Chavan’s defection would prompt a mass exodus of Congress MLAs, only one MLC from his hometown, Nanded, followed suit. Chavan, echoing sentiments of a new beginning, expressed his optimism about his political future within the BJP.
Chavan’s departure from the Congress comes hot on the heels of Mumbai Congress leader Baba Siddique’s resignation from the party to join the NCP. Siddique’s defection, orchestrated in the presence of NCP chief and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, underscores the allure of alternative political affiliations for disillusioned Congress members.
As the political landscape in Maharashtra undergoes seismic shifts, the Congress grapples with internal dissent and the looming threat of further defections. The absence of key MLAs from crucial party meetings serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of political alliances and the relentless pursuit of power in the state’s tumultuous political arena.
