In a significant move to raise awareness about the Indian Constitution, the Maharashtra government, led by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has introduced a new program named ‘Ghar Ghar Sanvidhan’ (Constitution in Every Home). This initiative is set to run throughout the 2024-25 academic year, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution. The primary objective is to enhance students’ understanding of the Constitution’s core values, rights, and responsibilities across schools, colleges, and educational institutions in the state.
According to a Government Resolution (GR) issued by the state, the initiative emphasizes the need to educate young people on their fundamental rights and duties as outlined in the Constitution. The government believes this effort will inspire a deeper sense of social justice, equality, and nationalism among students.
The program includes several key activities designed to familiarize students with the Constitution’s principles. Schools, colleges, and hostels are instructed to prominently display the Preamble and key objectives of the Constitution, ensuring they are easily accessible. Additionally, hostels are mandated to conduct daily readings of these objectives to reinforce their importance among students.
As part of this awareness drive, the initiative will feature 60-90 minute lectures in schools to discuss the creation of the Constitution, its various articles, rights, and duties. Educators will guide students through the philosophical underpinnings of the Constitution, ensuring they grasp its relevance in modern society. Workshops and seminars will also be organized to highlight the significance of constitutional values.
To further engage students, educational institutions will be encouraged to display informative posters and banners about the Constitution. Creative methods like street plays will be employed to raise awareness, while essay writing, debate, and elocution competitions will focus on constitutional themes, allowing students to actively engage with the subject matter. Moreover, local self-government meetings and state assembly sessions will now begin with the reading of the Preamble, reflecting the centrality of constitutional values in governance.
To ensure the smooth execution of the ‘Ghar Ghar Sanvidhan’ initiative, a 12-member state-level committee will be formed, chaired by the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra. Additionally, district-level committees, consisting of seven members and led by District Collectors, will oversee the implementation of the initiative at the local level.
This initiative is seen as a key step by the Maharashtra government to instill a deeper understanding of the Constitution in the younger generation, empowering them to contribute to a more just and equitable society.
