The Hague/Netherlands: Few days back I attended one webinar about “Demystifying Artificial Intelligence (AI) – Data, Design and Disruption”. So I immediately started reading about what, why, How,  Where is AI used?

Artificial intelligence (AI), sometimes called machine intelligence, is intelligence demonstrated by machines, unlike the natural intelligence displayed by humans and animals.

A new domain has now emerged which people know as Artificial Intelligence which is basically a branch of Computer Science and whose main job is to create intelligent machines that are as intelligent as humans.  This will make our work even easier.

As we all know, man’s desire to know more made him think “Can machines think like us too?”  And in the same way, the development of Artificial Intelligence started, which had only one objective, to create an intelligent machine that is intelligent like humans and can think like us.

The full form of AI is Artificial Intelligence or artificial mind.  This is a simulation of which machines are given human intelligence or if they say so their brains are so advanced that they can think and work like humans.  This is especially done in the computer system.

This process mainly involves three processes and that is the first learning (in which information is put in the minds of machines and they are also taught some rules so that they follow those rules to complete a given task), second is Reasoning (under this, machines are instructed to move towards the results by following the rules so that they achieve approximate or definite conclusion) and the third is Self-Correction. In artificial intelligence, machines have also been given all the features of the human mind so that they can work better.

John McCarthy first told the world about Artificial Intelligence.  He was an American Computer Scientist and cognitive scientist  John McCarthy is one of the “founding fathers” of artificial intelligence, together with Alan TuringMarvin MinskyAllen Newell, and Herbert A. Simon. .McCarthy, Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester and Claude E. Shannon coined the term “artificial intelligence” in a proposal that they wrote for the famous Dartmouth conference in summer 1956. This conference started AI as a field.

If I talk about AI, with its help, it has become very easy to identify the pattern in raw data, while there are many mistakes made by humans, this gives companies more insight on their data in less time. If AI techniques are equipped with any complex programs, then the speed of execution can be increased to a great extent.

Artificial intelligence can be divided into many types, but the most prominent among them are:

Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) or Weak AI, which has a narrow range of abilities. These AI systems have been designed in such a way that they only do a particular task.  For example, there is a very good example of Virtual Personal Assistants such as Apple’s Siri weak AI.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or Strong AI , which is on par with human capabilities; or this type of AI system has the intelligence of a generalized human being so that if it is given a difficult task when it comes time, it can easily find its solution.

Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI), which is more capable than a human.

Range of AI Applications:

AI in Healthcare:

The largest use of AI is in the healthcare industry. The biggest challenge here is how we can treat patients better and that too at the least cost.  AI can effectively diagnose illnesses and already being used to detect diseases, such as cancer, more accurately and in their early stages.

All of this means quicker diagnoses, better treatment, more treatments options and reduced costs within the healthcare industry. With the use of all machines, a huge revolution is coming in the healthcare industry. During this pandemic the use of AI in healthcare rapidly increasing.

Recent example- AI tracking-based smart ventilator launched in Hyderabad.

These ventilators can not only auto adjust oxygen flow of a patient but can start tracing of all contacts of a critical Covid-19 suspect.

They also send alerts to doctors/ nurses and family members in case of an emergency, allow remote monitoring while the doctor is away from the hospital as well.

AI in Business:

AI helps improve sales forecasting, predict needs and preferences of customer and offer them better, personalized experience.

It improves much better communications also and  it saves  time and money by automating and avoids mistakes and specially ‘human error’. Chabot’s are being incorporated into the websites so that customers can be served as soon as possible.

A bot is a tool to automate interactions and engagements with website visitors or social media users. Bots usually talk with a user or customer through a conversational interface like Facebook Messenger or Slack.

AI in Education:

Now with the help of AI, automate grading can be done in education.

Auto-grading tools can save teachers time by providing immediate feedback to students and by automating parts of the grading process.

As we all know the world is facing  Covid-19 pandemic. Many school closed all across the world. Over billion children are out of the classroom. So as a result, the rise of e learning during Covid-19.

Virtual Tutor plays a very important role during the period of crisis.

On internet already there are many more ways available to help  students for example all types of assignments, research papers, PowerPoint presentations, an essay, E-books, Thesis statement generator etc

AI  tutors follow the same intention but with another level of  advance technology. Such as, AI tutors offer immediate feedback with personalized comments to every students.

Most popular AI Tutors in education are:

1) iTalk2Learn – iTalk2Learn is a 3 year collaborative European project (Nov 2012 – Oct 2015) with the aim of developing an open-source intelligent tutoring platform that supports maths learning for students aged 5 to 11.

2) Thirdspace Learning or Virtual Class Ltd. – Thirdspace Learning is one of the largest online platform for online math.

They provide personalised 1-to-1 maths lessons to children via secure online classroom, with access to high quality primary maths teaching resources and up-to-date continuing professional development modules for teachers through online learning hub.and also provide free access to resources, blog posts and articles to teachers and parents via  social media platforms.

3) Duolingo Chatbot – Duolingo’s chatbots helps you learn a new language.

4) Thinkster Math – Thinkster Math leverages human interaction and groundbreaking artificial intelligence to create personalized math learning programs.

5) EdTech Foundry – EdTech Foundry is a startup factory that builds products for higher education. They collaborate with universities to solve problems, validate solutions and build, run and scale their own edtech startups.

The current flagship is differ.chat – the course communication app for higher education.

AI in Finance:

Artificial intelligence in finance is transforming the way we interact with money. Professionals who want to gain a solid understanding of the business opportunities surrounding the use of artificial intelligence in business.  Financial institutions are getting a lot of benefits with the help of AI with the short time .

AI in Manufacturing:

The use of AI also plays a very important role in the manufacturing industry.  Earlier, thousands of people used to do the same work, but with the help of a machine, the same work is being done very quickly and without any error.

Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history. Unfortunately, it might also be the last, unless we learn how to avoid the risks – Stephen Hawking.

Wisely said by Stephen Hawking, every coin has two sides like AI has some disadvantages also but we keep in mind that we should keep the key of control in our hand.so that when proper time comes we’ll definitely use it properly.-By Adv Pranita A. Deshpande
