Former Union Health Minister and stalwart Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, announced his retirement from politics on Sunday, a day after the BJP unveiled its first list of 195 candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024. Notably absent from the list, Dr. Harsh Vardhan’s decision to step away from the political arena marks the end of a distinguished career spanning over three decades.
Taking to his official social media account, Dr. Harsh Vardhan shared his heartfelt sentiments, expressing his intention to return to his roots, particularly to his ENT clinic in Krishna Nagar. He reminisced about his electoral journey, boasting victories in all five assembly and two parliamentary elections he contested, often with remarkable margins. Throughout his tenure, he held various esteemed positions within the party organization and both state and central governments.
Reflecting on his motivations, Dr. Harsh Vardhan highlighted his enduring commitment to serving humanity, a principle instilled in him during his medical education at GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, fifty years ago. As a dedicated swayamsewak, he professed admiration for Deen Dayal Upadhyay’s Antodaya philosophy, emphasizing his belief in politics as a means to combat poverty, disease, and ignorance.
Acknowledging his tenure as Delhi Health Minister and two-time Union Health Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan recounted his pivotal role in India’s polio eradication efforts and the nation’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed pride in his unwavering dedication to safeguarding human lives during moments of unprecedented crisis, attributing his sense of duty to both his devotion to the country and the values enshrined in the Constitution.
In bidding adieu to the political realm, Dr. Harsh Vardhan expressed profound gratitude to the nation, reverence for his fellow citizens, and unwavering loyalty to the principles of democracy. He concluded by humbly acknowledging the greatest privilege bestowed upon him – the opportunity to save lives, a responsibility he embraced wholeheartedly throughout his illustrious career.
